Rouskey Community Centre was opened in 2001 with grant aid from the Millennium Halls Programme, R.D.C Community Based actions and Omagh District Council. The local community raised ten thousand towards the building costs.
We provide the local and wider community with a large variety of educational and recreational classes to suit all ages from the very young to 90 plus. We hire out the centre for funeral teas, private parties and other functions including traditional music classes for children and ceili nights. Entertainment nights are organised including Colum Sands and special guests, Len Graham and the late John Campbell. In 2006 the BBC recorded the ‘BBC Tractor show’ in Rouskey with Conor Grimes and Alan McKee.
At present funding has been received from the Arts Council of N. Ireland to provide a variety of arts and crafts classes/workshops including; water colouring painting, candle wick embroidery, singing, beginners and advanced sculpture making. Further workshops are planned including basket making and stick making. Other classes at present include computer classes, drama, yoga, keep-fit, jive and old thyme dancing,
We have participated in the Community Show Case 2010. A group of young people aged between 7-14yrs put on a play directed by Cliodhna Mc Callan and performed it in Strule Arts Centre and Greencastle Community hall. Due it great success the drama class is being continued this year. We have been funded by ‘Awards for All’ for other classes, including reflexology, nutrition classes and a large variety of craft classes.
We have also received funding from Omagh District Council and the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland for a variety of craft classes for the over 55s. Omagh Forum have helped our group in many ways over the years and we are very grateful for their support
The centre provides a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, and this is reflection in the high attendance at all classes and events held here.
